Twinned with Warkworth, New Zealand, the earliest records of Warkworth in Northumbria date back to the eighth century. The well known Warkworth Castle was not, however, built until the twelfth century. The first castle structure was most likely a wooden construction built by Henry, the son of King David I of Scotland. Henry owned the land then and had the title 'Earl Henry of Northumberland' at a time when the north of England was part of Scotland. In 1158, Henry II gave the Castle to Roger FitzRichard, who began to rebuild it with stone, and his son Robert continued to improve and add to the buildings.

It is believed that King Edward I spent a night in the castle in 1292, and in 1296 the Anglo-Scottish wars began and the castle was manned by troops. In 1319, a garrison of twenty-four soldiers and staff took care of the castle with half the cost being paid by the King, who later became owner of the castle. In 1332, Edward III granted Warkworth and its castle to Henry de Percy II, and for four hundred years the castle was passed back and forth between the Percy family and the royal family.

Because of the high costs of maintaining the castle, the Duke of Northumberland passed the castle to the nation in 1922. It later became part of the Office of Works, and afterwards passed into the custodianship of English Heritage for preservation and to maintain the castle for public viewing.
