Northumberland Coast stretches from Berwick-upon-Tweed to the River Coquet estuary with a total length of 39 miles. Northumberland coast is best known for its sweeping sandy beaches, rolling dunes, high rocky cliffs and isolated islands. The coast sweeps along some of the Britain’s finest beaches and is internationally renowned for its wildlife.
It was designated AONB status in 1958 and is looked after by ‘Northumberland Coast AONB Partnership’. The partnership is a broad selection of people from local authorities, statutory organizations, interest groups and from the local community.
Northumberland Coast along with the Northumberland Park is one of the protected landscapes in UK. There are total 50 AONBs in England, Wales and Northumberland. There are 41 in England & Wales and 9 in Northern Ireland.
Beside the striking landscape Northumberland is holding evidences of human activity since about AD 75. Northumberland has been largely rural and have not been affected by development and agriculture. The area is a host of many conservation sites, including two National Nature Reserves with a great variety of wildlife and habitat for different species.
The coast is never wider than 1.6 miles and only 170 feet at its narrowest point. Beside the two National Nature Reserves – Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands; it has 3 Special Protection Areas for birds, 2 Special Areas of Conservation, 2 Ramsar sites – Wetlands of International Importance and 21 Scheduled ancient monuments.
It is a low-lying coast with long views. It attracts thousands of visitors per day. There are many wonderful holiday cottages alongside the coast. It is a popular holiday destination and is compared with the best coasts of the world.
